Looks like he dropped the wiring going to the outlet at some point and blindly drilled looking for it? No idea. Love it!

He added an outlet taking the power from the wall switch. He ran the wiring by drilling through the studs at an angle through the big holes. Not clear why the holes are so close together though.

Since he hates filling drywall holes, he’s building a mirror and casing to cover them instead. Except for the part on the side wall.

Sure, I’d hire him to work on my house.

He must have inspired with the holes within cheese and decided your wall would be a canvas...

If you’re building a big old frame like that, why not just run the wire over the drywall instead...

(theoretical, this coming from the guy who is working on installing a flourescent fixture in his laundry room connected to a switch...pigtailed to a power strip)

Over the drywall wouldn’t meet code. A laundry fixture connected to a switch pigtailed to a power strip wouldn’t either, theoretically of course.

I give up on what the guy’s thinking. Looks like no one else here knows either. That might be a mirror over a vanity in a bathroom? Would explain the round hole in the top molding. Then wiring near water would kinda be like your laundry room, in theory.

Oh yeah I always forget about code =p

My whole house is one big fuck you to code, the guy before me did so much awful stuff, and I am continuing that tradition (albeit knowingly - this thing is getting torn down sometime in the next 5ish years)

Theoretically, I installed a light over a vanity by digging a channel through the drywall to the light with no box. It almost looks exactly like that picture except that guy used boxes. Luckily it’s in a rarely used basement bathroom. Despite what I did, I do like to follow code so my house doesn’t burn down. It’s on my to-redo list since I’m not planning on tearing down the house to correct everything.

Contractors can be as bad as any bad mechanic (or doctor or anyone you pay money to do something for you) if they think they can get away with it, hide it from inspectors, customer doesn’t know anything. I had one junction box in the basement packed with about 10 times more wires than it was rated for. Since that box actually got warm to the touch, I added an extension and doubled the volume to allow enough air space.
